Botanic Garden Offers Quirky Training Opportunity

The Dunedin Botanic Garden supports industry training, in partnership with other city organisations, by offering three-year horticultural apprenticeships, internships, international student placements and practical training.
This year, as an addition to the more formalised training opportunities, the Garden has teamed up with the Sir George Seymour National College of Airline, Travel and Tourism, to provide tourism students with an off-beat taste of what it’s like to work with the public.
On Rhododendron Day, 17 October, 15 tourism students disguised as ladybirds will be on the wing in the Botanic Garden’s Rhododendron Dell. The ladybirds will greet and act as tour guides to explorers as they follow a trail of clues leading to unexpected corners of the Dell.
Sir George Seymour College Campus Manager, Toby Mann, says, “Any liaison and interaction with the public is great experience for the students. They get a lot out of volunteering for different events around the city and they are really looking forward to the Rhododendron Day.”
The Botanic Garden has an international reputation for its training programmes and staff enjoy the opportunity and challenges this involves. Dunedin Botanic Garden and Cemeteries Team Leader, Alan Matchett says, “The Botanic Garden has many facets and we are constantly looking at new ways of engaging users and visitors to experience and benefit from this wonderful resource, and this is one such opportunity.

Rotorua and Waitomo Domestic Familiarisation Trip
Last month I was part of a group of Sir George students that had the opportunity to go away on a Domestic Familiarisation Trip. The purpose of a Domestic Famil is to experience and learn about some of the amazing tourist attraction that we have right here in New Zealand.
On our Famil we went to Waitomo and Rotorua for a night each. Over the three days that we were away we explored the Ruakuri Caves at Waitomo, ate Hangi at Mitai Maori Village, had a mud spa at Hell’s Gate Thermal Reserve and Bungy Jumped at Agrodome to mention only a few!!
Our Famil gave us a great insight into what we have on offer right here in New Zealand. Experiencing the domestic tourism industry has made me eager to get out there! It was an amazing learning experience, and also a lot of FUN!

Sir George Seymour corporate challenge

Corporate challenge was ran on campus recently to motivate students to dress in their best corporate wear on corporate days on campus. This included, wearing makeup, nicely styled hair, clothes that were, clean and pressed.
The challenge took 4 weeks to complete and each of the 8 classes had a nominated student each week. In the final draw there were a total of 32 students.
Emma from the International flight attendant class won and spent the day with Polly class tutor, being pampered, with a great hair style, makeup session, new complete set of nails and a $100 voucher from glassons, where stylish clothes were chosen including 2 new handbags.

Opportunities for Interislander roles for Sir George Seymour Students

50 students had the opportunity to travel on a day excursion on the Interislander on 12 & 13 August 2010 as part of an employment opportunity. Students got a behind the scene look at what its like to work as a cabin attendant on board the ship. The famil trip to Picton return involved, having a complimentary breakfast in the ships lounge first thing in the morning, visiting the galley area to speak to the head chef, and most importantly onto the bridge to check out the navigation area.
Students will then have the opportunity to apply for cabin attendant roles for intakes in Oct and Nov 2010. These positions will be a 6 month contract over the busy xmas, summer season. This gives the students the chance to gain experience in customer service, and the opportunity to then go onto roles with Airlines and cruise liners.

The following day July 17th was the big All Blacks test here in Welllington and 25 of our Sir George Seymour College students had the opportunity to work at this event to fundraise for their international families.
